Detailed description

The painting depicts a scene from a village on the Great Plain: a thatched, whitewashed peasant house stands at the center of the composition, in front of it a fence and blossoming shrubs, presumably roses or hibiscus. In the left foreground, a dirt road runs, while in the distance flat landscapes and green fields stretch out, with a few ducks in the left strip. In front of the house stands a woman dressed in traditional attire, wearing a pink skirt and a headscarf; this has a delicate dating characteristic, referring to peasant clothing from the early 20th century. The color palette consists of subtle, muted grays, broken greens, and earth tones, occasionally highlighted with brighter floral colors. The brushwork is short, airy, and has a plein air effect; the cloudy sky provides a soft rhythm of light and shadow, creating a feeling of afternoon light. The perspective has a low horizon, emphasizing the mass of the roof. In the lower right corner, there is a diagonally placed signature. Overall, it presents a naturalistic, post-impressionist village scene inspired by Nagybánya, by Ágoston Ács. A Hungarian painter from the first half of the 20th century, his themes frequently include rural genre scenes, landscape, and street details. His painting style is naturalistic, with a plein air approach, a muted, broken color palette, and light, short brushstrokes. His works regularly appear at domestic auctions, with his oil paintings depicting peasant houses, garden flowers, and figures in traditional dress being the most sought after.
