Detailed description

The still life appears in a crowded yet balanced composition: brownish-red fruits are arranged in a bowl and placed on the table, along with gourd-like shapes and a ceramic vase. In the background, a colorful bouquet or leafy branch breaks the space, with its vibrant spots swimming into the foreground. The color palette is based on warm ochre, red, and brown tones, with strong cool blue-green counterpoints; the white tablecloth serves as a breakthrough, light-catching surface. The brushwork is free, pasty, and fragmented, with wavy contours, and the form construction mostly consists of color patches. The light comes from the left, casting short and colored, non-neutral shadows of the objects. The fluted rim of the bowl and the dark bands of the vase give rhythm while the diagonal arrangement provides dynamism. Possible medium: oil, canvas, or cardboard. The style of the vision is post-impressionist–expressive; likely created in the 1930s–1940s.

Jenő Gadányi (1896–1960). A significant figure in Hungarian modern painting, active during the decades before and after the two world wars. His art is characterized by strong color contrasts, expressive rhythm, and free brushwork; his favored themes are still life and landscape. The lyrically expressive still lifes from the 30s-40s are closely related in composition and color to the presented work. The object density and fragmented color patch construction visible here fits well into the middle period of his oeuvre.
