Detailed description

The composition depicts a winding rural road corner with a plastered, off-white facade house on the left and a round-leaved tree in front of it, and on the right, a building with a reddish roof and a dark, arch-like passageway. The masses are built up of solid triangular and arched shapes; the contours are emphasized with black, at times scratched, dry-brush gestures. The color palette is based on earth tones: burnt umber, ochre, and deep green, which are counterpointed by cold, bluish-green and pale pink reflections. The surface is thick, sometimes heavily impasto; scattered golden-brown and black layers are perceptible, along with a rubbed, sometimes worn lacquer layer. The light-shadow construction is tonal, with the billowing masses of the canopies and the background's semi-arched brushstrokes creating a post-expressionist, archaizing effect. The typology of the houses, the brick-red roofs, and the whitewashed walls are tied to the rural motifs of the Carpathian Basin. Style direction: late Nagybánya influence and post-expressionism; likely decade: 1930s–1950s.
