Detailed description
Small-sized (24 x 16 cm) oil-canvas genre painting: an elderly fortune teller sits at a stone table in a cloak and headscarf, gazing into the palm of a young peasant girl with braided hair standing beside her. On the table, there are two playing cards and a coin visible; the girl is clutching a green purse in her right hand. On the left side of the background, there is a crumbling, plant-covered wall or ruin, while the rest of the space features a neutral, grayish-blue sky. The color palette is composed of muted earth tones, warm browns, and cool grays, with a strong accent on the girl's red vest and the blue, dotted apron. The brushwork is tight, sketch-like, with occasionally thin, smooth surfaces; the modeling of the faces is subtly toned. The light-shadow effect is moderate, with a dominant emphasis on plastic outlines and detail accuracy. The clothing (dirndl-like, laceless bodice, puffed sleeves) and chiromancy props evoke the academic-Biedermeier aftertaste of genre painting from the second half of the 19th century; the year 1881, readable in the corner of the painting, reinforces this. Likely decades: 1870s–1880s.
