Detailed description

The small painting depicts a flat landscape typical of the Great Plain, widely opened. In the foreground on the right stands a young peasant girl in a three-quarters turn, holding a green jug or watering can; she wears a headscarf, a white blouse, and a grayish-brown ankle-length skirt. The horizon runs low, and the composition is divided into horizontal bands: a green foreground, a gray-green middle ground, an ochre field of grain, and in the distance, whitewashed houses. The cloudy sky is bluish-gray, the light is diffuse and has a morning quality; the contrast is moderate. The brushwork is loose yet disciplined: short, flat strokes capturing blades of grass and clouds, with more solid, sketch-like solutions for the figure. The aerial perspective gently dissolves the distant zones. The ornate, Rococo revival golden frame gives the impression of an early to mid-20th-century replacement frame. Its iconography (jug-carrying girl in the field) follows the idealized, plein air representation of peasant life. Style direction: Nagybánya-naturalist influence; likely origin: v.
