Detailed description
Jean-Antoine Watteau's legendary composition titled Les Plaisirs du bal is one of the most iconic pieces of the 18th-century fête galante genre. This 40 × 50 cm oil on canvas painting is a faithful replica of this festive yet melancholic atmospheric scene. In the composition, elegantly dressed ladies and gentlemen dance in the courtyard of an arcaded palace, with blue-green trees and scattered light shining in the background. At the bottom of the painting, the signature 'Horváth I.' can be read, which is associated with a Hungarian copyist active in the first half of the 20th century. The work successfully evokes the theatrical ambiance and decorative color palette of Watteau's rococo style, with soft brushwork and a warm, golden-brown tonal range. Although not an original, the piece is an excellent example of the era when European masters' works were studied and interpreted with artistic fidelity. Valuable both as home decoration and as a collector's item, it is presented in a decorative, carved gilded frame.
