Detailed description
The oil painting depicts the courtyard of a rural farmhouse in the Great Plain, where three women are engaged in activities in front of the house. The thick, pasty layers of paint and the vibrant light effects are characteristics of the early 20th-century plein air movement. The thatched roof, the spread canvases, and the sunlight filtering through the leaves of the trees evoke the timeless motifs of Great Plain painting. The composition presents the relationship between the Hungarian landscape and its people in a simple yet deeply humane form. Although the creator's name is unknown, the artistic quality and atmosphere of the work carry the heritage of the Nagybánya and Kecskemét schools. This small-sized, yet strongly characterized painting is a lyrical document of Hungarian rural life.
