Detailed description
Four-figure, seaside scene: on the left, a seated figure draped in a veil looks at the viewer, in the center there are two women in skin-toned and ochre-brown clothing sitting on the cliff – the one in the foreground is holding a small book or box in her hand – and to the right, at the back, a standing figure wipes her hair. The horizon runs low, with stormy, off-white clouds and blue sky taking up a wide band. The texture is strongly segmented: in the clouds, there are rough, dry-brush strokes, on the flesh warm ochre-rose tones, with dark, brown shadows. The composition is triangular, the figures close towards each other, and the gazes spiral inwards. The clothing has a loosely historicizing, antiquizing effect with draperies; the women's hairstyles and the modeling indicate academic-salon education. The surface is occasionally rubbed, and the weave of the canvas is translucent. Overall, it presents a naturalistic-symbolizing variation on the theme of "bathers", likely from the period between the late 1890s and early 1910s.
