Detailed description

One of the special pieces of Luigi Rossini's (1790–1857) work is the depiction of the pyramid of Caius Cestius, which is a unique architectural monument of ancient Rome. The pyramid was built between 18 and 12 BC as a tomb for Caius Cestius, a wealthy Roman politician and priest. It reflects the Roman interest in Egyptian culture, which became particularly popular during the reign of Emperor Augustus, after the conquest of Egypt.

The 36-meter-high pyramid, covered with marble, is a unique example of ancient Roman burial customs, showcasing the fusion of Egyptian and Roman architectural styles. The pyramid is still visible today near the Porta San Paolo and was integrated into the city wall during the Middle Ages, which contributed to its preservation.

Rossini's engraving faithfully reflects the geometric forms and monumental appearance of the pyramid while also depicting its surroundings, which have evolved over the centuries. The work not only refers to the personality of Caius Cestius and the Roman interest in Egypt but also emphasizes the cultural richness of the ancient world and the enduring nature of architectural heritage.
