Detailed description
A meandering stream under a sunlit hillside; the composition is guided by the reflection of the water from the foreground to the middle ground, where a yellowish-ochre collapse and a dense, dark green mass of foliage close off the bank. In the front left, a bushy border, and at the back, creamy hills: the depth of the landscape is provided by the cool, misty background tone contrasting with the warm foreground. The painting style is post-impressionistic: the foliage is constructed from short, 'leaf-shaping' brushstrokes, with horizontal, elongated strokes indicating cloud and bank reflections on the water's surface. The palette features a wide range of greens (from olive to deep pine green) counterpointed by warm ochres and browns; the soft blue of the sky and the broken white patches of clouds open up the upper zone. The light is afternoon, coming from the right, illuminating the yellow bank and the edges of the trees.
Style: continental (Austrian–South German/Hungarian) landscape painting, post-impressionistic naturalism.
Probable decade: 1930–1960.
