Detailed description
The composition is centered around densely stacked blocks of houses with red roofs; a sloping road leads the viewer towards the crowd. The painter worked with thick, pasty layers of oil; the forms are held together by strong black outlines. The color palette is intense: cobalt and peacock blue sky, green-yellow foreground, warm orange and red accents on the roofs, with cool turquoise and purple shadows appearing in places. The light-shadow is not naturalistic, but rather appears in expressive contrasts. The brushwork consists of short, energetic strokes and curved, building-following gestures. The composition densifies to the right, while an open field stretches to the left; the horizon is low, and the perspective is slightly skewed. In the lower right corner, a reddish signature is legible ('Frank'). The theme and pictorial solutions are connected to the Hungarian post-fauve-expressionist tradition; based on its execution, its creation can be estimated to be in the 1950s–1960s.
