Detailed description
The painting depicts a crowded scene of village pilgrims. In the center of the composition stands a woman in a white apron bathed in light, surrounded by groups marching and conversing in the procession. A sideward light slices through the darker background. The color palette consists of earth tones, warm ochre, burnt sienna, deep browns, and dull greens. The image occasionally highlights the community of the pilgrims with vibrant reds, pinks, and whites. The brushwork is broad, loose, and occasionally impasto, with the faces and clothes of the figures composed of reduced patches, creating a sense of movement. The women's attire – skirts, aprons, shawls – and the men's hats and vests refer to early 20th century Hungarian folk costumes. The light and shadow are dramatic, yet the scene feels intimate.
