Detailed description

Bernard Bloch (1836–1909) was a Czech-Austrian ceramist and majolica manufacturer, who became well-known with his Eichwald factory established in 1871, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. His specialty was colorful, polychrome terracotta figurative decorations and wall plaques that depicted poetic and orientalist scenes. His works are strongly linked to the Art Nouveau style, characterized by soft lines, nature-centered motifs, and fine detail richness. The pieces often featured a stamped "BB" mark – which still helps to identify the original today.

His wall decorations, like this pair of oriental figurative plaques, measure around 30–50 cm, hand-painted and glazed.

His works were not only popular in Europe but also in North America. Bloch's majolica remains attractive to collectors as representative pieces of the German-Austrian ceramics industry.
