Detailed description
Mathurin Moreau’s angelic–allegorical compositions are not without precedent. The pairing of the protective, guiding angel and the young figure has been present in French salon sculpture since the mid-19th century, primarily interpreted as a moral parable. Moreau employs this established iconographic scheme with a subtly classicizing language of form and a balanced, narratively restrained solution. The emphasis is not on drama, but on harmonious figure relationships and the careful elaboration of details.
