Detailed description

The composition is an identical plastic formulation of the previously presented Virgilian scene, in another instance. In this version, Aeneas is rescuing his elderly father, Anchises, from the burning Troy, while his son, Ascanius, follows them. The emphasis is on the closed unity of the bodies and the heaviness of movement, as the burden of the father physically and morally determines the hero's posture. The restrained gestures and the block-like structure highlight the Roman pietas ideal.
