Detailed description

János Lukács Gyelmis (Szabadka, September 28, 1899 – Budapest, April 24, 1979) was a Hungarian painter. He studied at the Budapest Academy of Fine Arts between 1924 and 1926, where his teacher was Gyula Rudnay. After that, he worked at the Bükk artist colony. In 1929, he continued his studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, where he worked for two years under the direction of Galileo Chini. He lived in Italy until 1938. During this time, he participated in exhibitions in Milan, Brescia, Genoa, Trento, Venice, Mantua and Rovereto, among others. After returning home, he worked at the Novi Sad artist colony. In 1942, he won the large silver medal of the city of Novi Sad, and in 1963, he received a certificate of recognition in Palestrina, Italy. His art is characterized by powerful nudes, striking study heads and still lifes, as well as landscapes and figurative compositions based on the contrast of light and shadow. His form is characterized by enormous plastic power. He strived to harmonize the subtlety of colors, shapes and lines, and to exploit the luminosity of colors. His works can be found in the Modern Hungarian Art Gallery of the Janus Pannonius Museum in Pécs and in the Subotica City Museum.
