Detailed description
Small-sized (31 x 24.5 cm) oil painting on wooden panel: in a simple rural interior, a man and a woman sit facing each other at a narrow table covered with a tablecloth. The man wears a red cap and rusty brown trousers, while the woman wears a white bonnet, a red vest, and a blue buttoned shirt - typical 17th-century peasant attire, often referenced in the 18th-19th centuries. The composition is built around light coming from the right; the lead-framed, round window-patterned glazing casts cold reflections onto the dark background. The figures are reading a letter or a printed document; next to them, a tin cup and a small bowl appear as genre props. The brushwork is dry, with sketchy contours and short, covering brush strokes; the brownish-black underpainting and the settled, slightly yellowed layer of varnish enhance the tonal darkness. The perspective of the curved doorway and the right window is simplified. Overall, this work imitates Dutch genre painting and is presumably from the first to mid-19th century (approximately 1820-1860).
