Detailed description
The Art and Work of Aurél Bernáth
Aurél Bernáth (1895–1982) was a prominent figure in 20th-century Hungarian painting. He started his career in Vienna and Munich, where he was inspired by the vibrant color palette of post-impressionism and fauvism. Upon returning home, he worked in the artistic atmosphere of the Nyugat circle and the Gresham circle, developing his own monumental perspective.
In his paintings of Eastern landscapes and Budapest cityscapes, capturing atmosphere and the play of light and shadow contrasts are the main characteristics. In his landscape series, the shimmering colors of the Danube bank and the swirling clouds appear, while in his still lifes, simple forms become dynamic.
Some of his most famous works include "Clouds over the Danube," "Landscape after the Storm," and "Still Life with Blue Vase." In these paintings, the sharp opposition of colors and the concentrated brushwork reflect the artist's expressionist aspirations.
At the same time, Bernáth was also a respected teacher and art critic. From 1927, he taught at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts and later became the president of the Hungarian Painting Society. In his writings, he discussed the domestic integration of modern European trends, fostering the renewal of Hungarian art.
His artistic legacy continues to live vividly: his paintings enrich the representative collection of the Museum of Fine Arts and the Hungarian National Gallery. Through Bernáth exhibitions and monographs, the artistic community constantly rediscovers the diversity of his face and color worlds.
