Detailed description
The 25 cm diameter, circular cast iron relief depicts a classicizing seated female figure, holding a globe and a scepter – which can be interpreted as an allegory of knowledge, intellect, or science. The relief is surrounded by a rich ornamental rim decoration, in the form of acanthus leaves and volutes. The fine details of the casting and the surface's natural, even rust patina are characteristic of late 19th-century Central European foundries (Suhl, Neunkirchen, Val d’Osne). Such decorative panels were often made as elements of artistic ceramic stoves, fireplaces, or wall decorations, and today they are considered collector's rarities. The current example is complete, crack-free, and has a homogeneous surface.
