Detailed description
This wrought iron umbrella stand is a characteristic piece of the historicist decorative arts of the second half of the 19th century. Its slender, ribbed trunk and the dynamic lines of the voluted, three-legged base reflect the elegance of contemporary interiors. The four rings on the upper part were designed for storing walking sticks, umbrellas, and canes, while the bent, snake-like handle made it more comfortable to move the object. The fine wear on the black patina enhances the sense of antiquity. Similar pieces were also manufactured in France (Val d’Osne) and Germany (Neuwied), but Hungarian foundries – including Ganz and Salgótarján – also produced small furniture for hallways. It is valuable both as a functional and decorative object, evoking not only the atmosphere of historicist interior design but also representing the high standards of iron casting. This rare piece fits into interiors and preserves an authentic imprint of the artistic taste of the era.
