Detailed description
The painting evokes the lyrical, melancholic world of Hungarian symbolism at the turn of the century. The female figure standing under the solitary tree, the body leaning into the water, and the dull, brownish tones of light appear as an allegory of decay and self-reflection. The soft, fluid brushwork of the artwork and its almost monochrome color usage combine the naturalistic foundations of the Ferenczy school with a kind of inner, spiritual sensitivity. The cardboard support and the deep, cracked surface reinforce the turn-of-the-century origin. Although the creator's name is unknown, the compositional security and emotional depth of the work make it a rare, intimate piece of Hungarian symbolism.
