Detailed description
The large-scale graphite drawing depicts a finely toned urban waterside scene, where the arch of a bridge and the figure of a rowing man beneath it organize the composition. The diagonally running boat and the bridge arc create a distinct sense of depth, while the background buildings and vegetation appear compressed with painterly strokes. The paper has a slightly yellowed, patina-like surface, and the graphite lines are formed with cross-hatching and soft tonal transitions that depict the reflection of the water and the transitions of light. The style of the drawing evokes the graphic tradition of French Impressionism, particularly the urban studies of the Pissarro and Caillebotte circles, yet it is more akin to the work of a contemporary follower or commercial graphic artist. The lyrical atmosphere, restrained movement, and sensitive representation of light make the work a characteristic example of the airy drawing art at the turn of the century.
