Detailed description
The 30 × 50 cm, hand-colored etching represents one of the most popular themes in 19th-century British sporting depiction, known as sporting art, showcasing fox hunting. The composition's structure and figurative rhythm are closely related to Henry Thomas Alken (1785–1851)'s famous series of etchings titled Hunting Qualifications, which depicted the various 'qualifications' of hunting – skill, endurance, and falls – with humor and dynamism. Every detail of the present work carries the visual codes of the Alken school: the red hunting jackets, the galloping horses, and the diagonally arranged panorama combine the romanticism and dynamism of British rural life. The contours of the plate print are highlighted by delicate, watercolor-like hand coloring, which enhances the collector's value of early 19th-century etchings. The print, preserved in a dark original frame, is in good condition with slight paper fading while maintaining its archival character. The work belongs to the classic Alken-themed humorous hunting genre and is presumably from a contemporary English edition from the mid to late 19th century.
