Detailed description

The delicately toned, sensitive composition depicts a winter grove where cold light pierces through the bare branches of the trees. The measured color palette and the rhythmic rows of trees evoke the harmony-seeking, modern realist perspective of Árpád Illés's circle. The composition is both calming and thought-provoking — a quiet, intimate landscape that radiates the peace of nature.
Framed, ready to hang on the wall.

E. Illés A. (Árpád Illés, 1908–1980)

painter, graphic artist, illustrator

Árpád Illés was a prominent figure of the lyrical realist and expressive trends of 20th-century Hungarian painting. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts, where his teachers included masters such as Gyula Rudnay and István Szőnyi. In his early works, he studied the rhythm of nature and the changes in light, later creating landscapes with a unique, restrained color palette and a melancholic atmosphere.

His art is characterized by a balance of structural discipline and lyrical sensitivity: solitary rows of trees, waterside scenes, and humanless spaces often appear in his paintings, conveying the poetry of silence and transience. His watercolors and works in gouache evoke the innermost moods of nature with their subtle tonal shifts.

He was also known as an illustrator, creating illustrations for numerous Hungarian literary classics. His works are found in the collections of the Hungarian National Gallery and several regional museums, and they appear in various domestic auctions.
