Detailed description
The 62 × 50 cm oil–masonite painting is an intimate example of mid-20th century Hungarian portrait painting. The composition depicts a half-length pose of a girl in a pink dress at rest, with a dreamy, closed-eyed facial expression. The relaxed, pasty brushwork, warm, harmonious colors, and subtle light transitions place the work within the realm of impressionistic realism. The piece can be considered a continuation of the Szőnyi–Bernáth lyrical portrait tradition, in which the painter captures a moment of human tranquility and intimacy. Based on the masonite base and the characteristic color treatment, the work can be dated to the 1940s to 1960s. The gold–black double frame emphasizes the warm tones of the painting.
