Detailed description
"Young Couple in the Field" – Folk Genre Scene
Oil, canvas, 12.5 × 17 cm
This small-sized but finely crafted genre painting was created at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, depicting a young couple from the everyday life of the Hungarian countryside. The girl is sitting on the ground holding a flower, while the boy playfully leans over her. In the background, there are village houses and a spacious, green field, while in the foreground, an overturned barrel adds a humorous, lifelike detail to the composition.
The painting follows the tradition of the so-called "little Hungarian genre," a popular genre at the turn of the century. Its intimacy and lyrical tone make it a characteristic example of folk life painting.
A Munkácsy signature is legible in the lower right corner, but the painting is not by him.
