Detailed description
This 20 × 24 cm oil on canvas painting is extremely small but dynamic, a meticulously painted work depicting a hunter or military scene with a horse-drawn sled in a winter landscape. Based on the composition and paint application, it likely originates from the second half of the 19th century and can clearly be categorized as romantic-realist.
The scene shows two horses pulling the sled, with several figures: one man holds a spear, while the other holds the reins, as they gallop through the snowy landscape. In the background, a bluish-grey, icy hillside and a gloomy sky emerge.
The artist managed to convey dramatic movement on the small surface: the momentum of the horses is highlighted with short, dense brush strokes, while the curve of the sled and the movements of the figures are emphasized with golden brown and bluish tones. The fine cracking (craquelure) and deep tones suggest that the work is at least 120–150 years old.
The ornate, gilded oval frame is likely original and suits the age of the painting.
Style: romantic historical genre, likely Austrian-Hungarian or Russian school, approx. 1850–1880.
