Bernadett Istók: New Dimensions of Contemporary Art

Bernadett Istók (1978–) graduated from the painting department of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, and then further developed her art with a scholarship at the UdK in Berlin. In her early works, she focused on the deconstruction of the post-socialist urban landscape and the examination of collective memory, while later she began to explore the relationship between the body and space.

Her art focuses on spatial experiments and interactive elements. Bernadett often uses architectural modules that engage the viewer in a playful manner. Her creations are both conceptual and offer sensory experiences, highlighting the continuous change of individual and social identity.

Her paintings feature vibrant color contrasts, layered textures, and abstract forms, while in her installations she creates an immersive atmosphere through sound and light technology. By combining naturalistic elements with digital codes, her works simultaneously preserve the memory of the past and project into the technological future.

Her most renowned works include the “Metropolis Utopias” series of paintings, where the urban structure unfolds as a living organism, and the “Human Image” interactive installation, where visitors engage in dialogue through their shadows. Her works have been exhibited at the Mumok in Vienna, the Tate Modern in London, and the Ludwig Museum in Budapest.

With her art, Bernadett Istók creates bridges between tradition and contemporary technology. The main message of her work is that the artistic experience encourages social responsibility. Her future plans include initiating interdisciplinary research projects and creating new, community-based exhibitions.
