Detailed description
The 22.5×16 cm oil painting follows the tradition of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish depictions of women with music. The seated lady, with a lute in her hand, looks up at her companion who is holding sheet music — the scene, interpretable as an allegory of music, exudes an intimate, chamber-like atmosphere. The painter has carefully observed the different textures of materials: the silk dresses, the pearl necklace, and the surface of the instrument appear plastic in quality. Although the composition of the scene is of baroque origin, the finesse of execution and the proportional handling of space suggest rather a 19th-century academic hand. The contemporary, neobaroque gilded frame further enhances the historicizing effect. The painting is a decorative, intimate piece, reinterpreting the traditions of Dutch art.
