Detailed description

Luigi Rossini (1790–1857) captured with extraordinary care the architectural monuments of historical and mythical significance in Rome, including the temple of Mars the Avenger (Mars Ultor) found in Augustus' Forum (Forum Augustum). The temple was consecrated by Emperor Augustus in 2 BC to express his gratitude for avenging the murder of his father, Julius Caesar, and for his victory in the battle of Philippi.

The building, with its monumental size and fine details, represented the pinnacle of Roman architecture. At the center of the temple stood a statue of Mars, the god of war, and it was the site of important state ceremonies, such as victorious parades of military leaders. Rossini's etching depicts the remaining parts of the temple, particularly the enormous Corinthian columns and the ornate friezes, faithfully showcasing the sophistication of ancient Roman art and engineering.

The ruins of the temple can still be visited today and stand as one of the most recognizable elements of the Roman Forum. Rossini's work highlights the monumentality of the temple and its religious and political significance, while conveying the romantic beauty of the passage of time and the ruinous state of the structure. The creation is a tribute to the greatness and cultural heritage of the Roman Empire.
