Detailed description

Luigi Rossini (1790–1857) immortalized the glory of Roman ancient architecture with his richly detailed engravings. The Temple of Antoninus Pius, which was built by Marcus Aurelius in AD 161 in honor of his predecessor, Antoninus Pius, and his wife, Faustina, was one of the most impressive buildings of ancient Rome. The portico, or columned hall, surrounding the cella of the temple reflected the fine details and symmetrical harmony of Roman architecture.

Rossini's work presents a section of the ruins of the portico, paying special attention to the surviving columns and the decorative elements that adorn them. The composition highlights the relationship of the building to its environment, which has been covered by layers of earth over the centuries (the phrase “Dagona di Terra Pinaza” may refer to this, evoking the buried state of the ruins).

The ruins of the temple can still be seen today, partially integrated into the modern Roman cityscape, particularly near the Piazza della Rotonda. Rossini's work not only immortalizes the architectural masterpieces of the ancient world but also draws attention to the fragility of Roman heritage and the importance of its preservation. The creation is an impressive tribute to Antoninus Pius and the greatness of Roman architecture.
