Detailed description

This is a 32.5 × 25 cm graphite drawing paper, signed with "Gulácsy L.", an extremely interesting and sensitive work that strongly resembles the portrait and study drawings of Lajos Gulácsy (1882–1932) in its composition, melancholic mood, and line work, although this work does not originate from him.

The image depicts the portrait of a young woman in profile, with a deep, inward-looking gaze. The hair is rendered in dark tones with strong graphite shading, while the face is almost "virginal" – barely touched by the pencil, allowing the paper's natural brightness to convey the delicacy of the skin.
The contrast (strong hair mass – light face) is characteristic of Gulácsy's compositional solutions, as is the slightly dreamlike, melancholic expression. The unusual intensity of the eyes, the delicate uncertainty of the line around the mouth, and the trembling play of shadows are all traits of symbolist-expressive portrait representation.

Style: symbolist, introspective portrait
Likely creation period: 1910–1920s
Technique: graphite, paper, tonal preliminary drawing
