Detailed description

Zsolnay Ceramics: Historic Pierced Two-Handled Vase - On a Base

The Zsolnay Artistic Manufactory became world-famous in Pécs at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century when it combined traditional Hungarian folk motifs with modern technologies. The presented Historic Pierced Two-Handled Vase - On a Base is a masterpiece that exemplifies the rich language of form and fine craftsmanship of the manufactory.

The vase designer, Sikorski Tádé, was one of the most innovative ceramic artists of the era. In his works, he often drew inspiration from the hearths of Eger, Hungarian Baroque architecture, and Renaissance decorative motifs. His designs are characterized by monumentality and intricate ornamentation, which perfectly fit the Zsolnay pyrogranite technology.

The workshop contributions of Julia and Teréz were essential for the realization of the design. As the talented female painters of the manufactory, they were responsible for highlighting the vase's pierced pattern and the hand decoration under the glaze. Through their precise brushwork and thorough pattern reading, each piece became unique and refined.

The vase's pierced structure allows for a delicate play of light and shadow, while the two-handled, symmetrical arrangement evokes classicism. The standing form lends stability while enhancing the elegance of the object. The enamel works on a soft cream-colored base with gilded contours, emphasizing Baroque floral and garland motifs.

When marked, the Zsolnay Pécs factory sign, the form number, and the inscription "artist" were used, which authenticates the contributors' involvement. This marking is also important for collectors, as it provides accurate information regarding the production date and the designer.

Overall, the "Historic Pierced Two-Handled Vase - On a Base" carries the diversity of the manufactory and the patina of the turn of the 19th to 20th century. Sikorski Tádé's design vision, along with Julia and Teréz's craftsmanship, unites in an artistic creation that remains one of the shining examples of the Zsolnay heritage to this day.
