Detailed description
Introduction
Smits (1952–) is one of the most innovative figures in contemporary visual art, exploring the play of light and space in his paintings and installations. Born into a Dutch-Belgian family, he studied at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts and then continued his experimental phase in New York.
Details of His Work
In the 1980s, Smits began creating under the influence of abstract expressionism, where he produced energetic compositions with dynamic brushstrokes. From the 1990s onwards, he turned towards minimalism: his works are characterized by refined forms, precise lines, and engineering accuracy. One of the artist's main goals is to enhance the interaction between the viewer and the space, which he often complements with installation elements.
Notable Works
In his series “Lichtspiel” (1992), he explores the projections and shadows of light by combining acrylic paint with mirror surfaces. “Dance of Forms” (2001) is a collection of geometric reliefs that give the space an almost organic pulsation. “Sound of Emptiness” (2010) is an interactive installation where the visitor's movement triggers sound and light phenomena.
Legacy
Smits' art transcends traditional painting boundaries. His innovation and genre-crossing serve as inspiration for the younger generation. His works are exhibited worldwide and preserved in numerous art collections, proving that the creator's legacy has a lasting significant impact on contemporary art.
