The still life painted on a 9.5×14 cm wooden panel features a bouquet of pansies in a simple vase in its condensed composition. The vibrant colors of the flowers – yellow, purple, white, and lilac – almost glow against the dark background, while the painter has shaped the petal textures with thick brush strokes. Light focuses on the upper part of the composition, dissolving below with the delicate shadows of the drapery. The work simultaneously preserves the 19th-century Dutch-influenced tradition and the expressive material handling of the early 20th century.
