Detailed description
Adrien-Étienne Gaudez The bronze statue titled Belluaire represents the classical ideal of mastery over man and beast. The calm confidence of the contraposto male figure stands in sharp contrast to the tension of the restrained animal, thus the focal point of the composition shifts to the balance of control and strength. The anatomically precise shaping of the body and the restrained movement link the work to the tradition of ancient heroic representation. Gaudez's creation is a characteristic example of the disciplined, idealizing approach of 19th-century academic sculpture.
