Vertical format, approximately 70 x 50 cm, created on paper medium, a composition of gestural painting character. The background is grayish-brown, built up of layers that are occasionally translucent, showing broom-like, dry brush strokes and rubbed surfaces. Over this, the artist works with black, calligraphic brush strokes and white splashes; turquoise, green, and ochre accents break the monochromatic base in between. The surface occasionally shows a fine raster dotting, which may refer to print base or transfer technique; the entire image field is glued onto a larger sheet. In the lower right corner, a signature written in dark paint and a date resembling “64” can be read. The light-shadow relations do not create a representational depiction but rather evoke a depth akin to an energy field; the rhythm of the lines approaches the dynamism of French Tachisme and the European Informel gesture language. Probable style: Informel/abstract expressionism; dating: mid-1960s to early 1970s.
