Silence under the tower

A village edge with a glade landscape: to the left, a denser, grayish-green canopy of trees and a low thatched-roof hut, in the middle a shallow waterfront/calm stream, behind it, whitewashed houses with red roofs; on the horizon, a slender church with a red tower dome. In the central space, 6–7 figures are resting and talking (women in headscarves with blue, ochre, and red accent colors), on the right, a tall, solid chunk of foliage closes the picture. The light is from the morning to noon, under a fluffy cloud sky with scattered sunlight; the yellowish-green reflections of the water rhythmically shape the field. Middle-loose brushwork, occasionally with pasty applications; the forms are block-like, and the contours blend softly. Iconography: rural idyll, harvesting/summer resting mood. The costumes are generalized (not confined to a specific region). Style: late, decorative naturalism/post-impressionism, nourished by the Nagybánya tradition. Likely decade: 1920s–30s (the era of Iványi-Grünwald’s late, Balaton–plain idylls).

Béla Iványi-Grünwald (1867–1940). The founding master of the Nagybánya artist colony, later the leader of the Kecskemét artist colony; after his early plein air, colorful post-impressionist period, he painted decorative folk themes and rural landscapes in the 1910s to 30s. His strong colorism, block-like shaping, and balanced compositions fit well with the character of the current work.
