Detailed description
Large vertical composition: two ladies are sitting beside a set table in a dimly lit salon interior. The figure on the left is visible in profile, holding a playing card in her right hand, which the lady opposite is observing. The table is adorned with a porcelain tea set, a liqueur bottle, a jug, and a row of cups; the corner of the fringed tablecloth hangs down. In the lower right corner, a bouquet of flowers peeks from a chair. The deep brown panels in the background serve as a dark curtain, from which the warm, ochre, and amber-lit illumination highlights the plasticity of the faces and hands. The painting style is academic-realistic, with wide, wet brushstrokes in the folds of the clothing; the leather surfaces are modeled with delicate transitions. In the lower left corner, there is a reddish, hard-to-read signature (characteristic of “K…y”). The hairstyles and lace-collared dresses evoke the bourgeois taste of the turn of the century. Style direction: academic realism, bourgeois genre scene; likely decades: 1890–1910.
