Detailed description
The painting represents a reinterpreted version of the legend of Saint George.
On the left side of the composition, a golden armored knight is depicted, leaning forward from a huge, winged horse (or mythical creature), thrusting his spear into a black dragon crawling on the ground.
On the right side, a naked female figure is tied to a rock, half-turned, her expression a mix of fear and relief — the classic “saved virgin” iconography.
The swirling smoke in the background and the light shadow emanating from the dragon's mouth create a dramatic theatrical effect.
The figure of the knight in detail evokes the world of early 20th-century symbolist and romantic painters (Moreau, Böcklin, von Stuck), but the representation of the female body already reflects 20th-century modern naturalism.
Thus, the composition of the work represents a transition between classical academic mythology and the expressive-symbolist painting of the mid-20th century.
