Detailed description
Erzsébet Kalicza, an artist nurtured in Lajos Deák-Ébner's women's painting school, is a remarkable figure in early 20th-century Hungarian painting, which is still rarely studied today. Although mainly portraits and floral still lifes are known from her oeuvre, this work attests to her proficiency in academic figure painting as well. The female figure at the center of the 40×21 cm canvas poses in a contrapposto stance, with drapery cascading from her left arm and a neutral background that clearly evokes the atmosphere of studio studies. The color palette is subdued, dissolving into brownish-gray tones, from which the model's fair rosy hues delicately emerge. The brushwork is plastic but not overly detailed; the emphasis is on the proportions of the body and the harmony of the composition. The signature “Kalicza” placed in the lower right corner authenticates the authorship, in line with the artist’s other known marks. The uniqueness of the figure lies in the fact that it documents Kalicza's rarely occurring early academic practice, thus representing a valuable and noteworthy piece in the history of Hungarian women's painting.
