Detailed description

Pietro Masulli (Candela, 1824 – Naples, January 1, 1876) was a famous Italian sculptor and bronze worker, who became known primarily for his bronze sculptures. He favored reproductions of ancient statues and passionate historical-animal depictions, and was the first to apply the Cellini wax-loss bronze casting technique in Naples. In 1863, he completed the famous statue of Giordano Bruno in the Naples "Cortile del Salvatore" courtyard – this work was inaugurated on January 2, 1865, and is still one of his most recognized creations. His heyday was characterized by his bronzetto copies, such as the Narcissus from 1864, which features the inscription "P. Masulli Napoli". His workshop established a connection with another famous bronze caster, Gennaro Chiurazzi's workshop – Masulli taught him, and later Chiurazzi founded the Fonderia Chiurazzi, which continued the Masulli era. His body of work was characterized by respect for ancient forms and technical expertise, the traces of which are preserved in his bronzed patina creations. He died in Naples in 1876 at the age of fifty-two – after his death, Chiurazzi's workshop continued his legacy.
