Detailed description

A small-sized, horizontal oil painting, densely gilt, in a Rococo-style frame. At the center of the composition stands a stately tree; in the foreground, resting figures dressed in a pastoral-dream style are visible, one of whom wears a vivid red cloak. In the background, there is a scene indicated by shepherd's crooks, possibly with goats or hornless sheep, and a low horizon with a hazy sky. The color palette is soft and pastel: blue-greens, earth browns, and rosy pink accents; the light is diffused with an afternoon effect. The brushwork is subtly broken, building with loose patches; a thin, glossy layer of varnish and small micro-cracks can be observed. The clothing is of 'fête galante' nature: knee breeches, laced women's waist, light cloak – an 18th-century costume idyll. The imagery leans more towards a Rococo after-feeling/pastiche, rather than naturalistic plein air. It was likely created in the first half of the 20th century, around the 1920s to 1940s, evoking the tradition of French Rococo (Watteau–Boucher–Fragonard).

Hermann Lipót (1884–1976) was a Hungarian painter and graphic artist. After the turn of the century, he became known for his naturalistic–impressionistic cityscapes, portraits, and characteristic graphics; he also created small oil studies and echoes from historical/'old masters'. The Rococo-idyll of this current painting is not characteristic of his main genre, but it may fit into the 20th-century historicizing practice of replicas/copies.
