Detailed description
Landscape painted with oil on wooden panel (approx. 34.5 × 50 cm), with an evening yellow-gold atmosphere. The composition is guided into the depth of the painting by a winding dirt road in the center; on the left and right sides, steep, stony bank walls and bushy-crowned trees frame the scene. In the foreground, two peasant boys are conversing with a gray donkey, a woman sitting to the left with a basket, and a headscarfed woman at a fountain with a jug on the right. In the middle ground, there’s a ruined gateway, and in the background, blue-gray mountain ranges and a misty aerial perspective. The color palette consists of warm ochres, olive greens, and browns, with the air and light effects indicated by delicate glazes, and the details highlighted by painstaking, smooth brushwork. The entire surface is covered with a uniform, strong network of cracks; the varnish layer has yellowed. In the lower right corner, a signature resembling 'C. Markó' is visible in red paint. Iconography: the Italian Campagna idyll with travelers, ruins, and a spring. Style: Classicizing-Romantic, Markó school; dating likely to the 1860s–1880s.
