Detailed description

Medium-sized, presumably oil-canvas landscape that showcases a group of timber-framed buildings standing in a fjord-like lakeside valley. On the left, there is a raised house on legs with an external staircase and balcony-like gallery, while on the right edge, a smaller storage building stands on a pier, both topped with a slender decorative pole rising from their roofs. The composition diagonally leads towards the distant water surface; in the foreground, two walking figures invite the viewer in, while in the center, a wind-blown, lace-leafed tree enlivens the scene. The color palette is based on warm brown and green tones, counterbalanced by a bluish-gray sky and fading mountain range. The painter applies a harder, contouring brushwork for the buildings, while for the foliage, dotted, short, vibrating brush strokes dominate; the atmospheric perspective's haziness intensifies towards the distant water and mountains. A uniform, aged craquelure is observable on the surface. Based on iconography and architectural features, Norwegian-type stabbur houses are evoked. Style: Romantic-Biedermeier landscape painting; likely decades: 1850-1880.
