Detailed description
A 64.5 × 50 cm oil on canvas painting is a high-quality, 19th-20th century replica of the famous composition by Jan Miense Molenaer (1610–1668), titled The Pair Playing Music. It depicts an intimate moment between a man and woman playing music, a popular genre theme from the Dutch Golden Age, and a classic example of the moralizing genre. The composition faithfully portrays the man holding a lute and the woman reading sheet music in a space bathed in warm, inner light. The details' elaboration, the faithful tones of the colors, and the precise painting of the objects testify to the high level of academic copying practice. The painting is a beautiful example of the late 19th to early 20th century 'Old Masters' renaissance copying wave.
The original work is located in the Museum of Fine Arts (Budapest) in the Old Master Gallery.
