Detailed description
Oil on canvas composition depicting a rocco costume society in a garden, at a terrace railing. On the left, a dancing lady with a tall, puffed-up hairstyle adorned with feathers presents a dynamic motion that contrasts with the static posture of a young woman in a yellowish dress on the right. In the center, a smaller group is whispering under a sun umbrella; behind them, the silhouette of dark bushes and architecture can be seen. The color palette consists of muted gold-brown, olive green, ochre, and rose tones, interrupted by patches of light breaking through a dark background. The brushwork is loose, at times impasto, especially in the blooming bower; the figures' faces are sketchy, shaped with transparent glazes. An L-shaped old patch and extensive natural craquelure can be observed on the back of the canvas; the current gilded, flower-adorned frame is a piece from the late 19th century Rococo revival. Iconography: fête galante, courtly leisure. Style direction: Rococo revival in the Watteau–Fragonard tradition, likely from the 1880s–1900s.
