Detailed description
Horizontal composition, large-sized paper work, on which in the right third two faces appear: in the foreground, a half-profile of a man with a hat and wrinkled features has a strong, characteristic look, behind him a hooded figure appears more faintly. The surface is built up of tonal, grayish-brown washes and black charcoal/graphite line work; the large, blurred, atmospheric strip in the left field counterbalances the dense group of forms on the right. The brushwork is patchy, with rapid, energetic pencil/chalk marks, sometimes cross-hatching. A marked light-shadow play models the faces, especially around the eyebrows and nose shadows. The clothing is simple, suggesting working-class or rural attire; the headgear and the covered background figure carry a sense of timelessness. In the lower right corner, there is a monogrammed mark (“MDz?”). The paper is slightly yellowed, with small creases and rubs noticeable. Style: expressive realism with a graphic character; likely decades: 1950s-1970s.
