Detailed description
A charcoal/conte drawing of an older bearded man in profile looking to the left, made on brown-toned, medium-thick paper. The 56 x 41.5 cm sheet's composition focuses on the head and chest, with the background completely empty, thereby emphasizing the character's facial features. The drawing technique varies: the eye, bridge of the nose, and eyebrow are shaped with solid, dark tones and smudging; the beard and shoulders are indicated with looser, sweeping gestures. The light-shadow creates a strong contrast around the eye socket and the root of the nose, while the warm base color of the paper provides a consistent uplifting tone. The head covering (cap/scarf) suggests simple, working-class or peasant attire. There is a horizontal, old fold mark running through the middle of the sheet, and slight spotting is visible in places; at the lower right section, a graphite-like signature reading 'Cimper' is legible. Overall, it presents an academic-naturalistic portrait study, with powerful realistic character representation; likely created in the 1930s-1950s.
