Detailed description

This 40 × 30 cm finely detailed oil on canvas artwork depicts an intimate, emotional genre scene: we see the figures of two children, one of whom is comforting the other. The warm, brownish-green background, the detailed execution of the figures, and the plasticity of the paint bear the mark of a 19th-20th century academic painter.

The composition and the painter's approach indeed resemble Léon Azéma (1888–1978)’s sensitive series of children, which navigate the boundary between French realism and sentimentality. However, it is likely that this painting is the work of a Central European (Hungarian or Austrian) educated painter, who painted the scene following Azéma's style.
